Herman Van Rompuy awarded the Prize Nueva Economía in Madrid
Extract of Speech by Herman VAN ROMPUY, President of the European Council at the occasion of the Prize Nueva Economía.
The euro is our common destiny. We are determined to do whatever is needed to ensure the financial stability of the Euro area. There is no viable alternative to the euro. The only alternative would be not just recession, but depression and even chaos, not just in one member country but in all. People know it.
La gente no es tonta. There is no way back, and I am convinced that the Eurozone will emerge stronger from this crisis. It would also be helpful if we cut down on political posturing with ever brighter ideas, and instead focus on what is necessary and achievable. We know by now what everybody thinks; there is no need to repeat it every day.
The time for declarations of intention is over. Now is the time for decision. We will not be judged on our statements or intentions, but on our results. We have achieved those results in the past, we have them today, and we will achieve them in the future. Because we believe in that great idea and ideal of Europe, the most important legacy of our predecessors and our most inspiring project.
